- 1872 Victoria Claflin is the 1st female presidential candidate.
- 1934 Coca Cola's Lettie Pate Whitehead is the first American woman to serve as director of a major corporation.
- 1964 Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of gender.
- 1987 Congress names March as National Women's History Month.
- 1992 Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois becomes the 1st Black woman elected to Senate.
- 2005 Condoleeza Rice is appointed the 1st Black female Secretary of State.
