Youth Central: A Place for Suspended Students

In 2003, Pastor Frank Thompson of The Worship Center Orlando, didn't imagine that his effort to keeps kids off the streets would turn into an innovative program supported by Orange County Public Schools and the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Youth Central began when Pastor Frank was at church midweek and an elementary aged boy walked in during the afternoon. Upon questioning the child for being out of school, he learned that he was suspended and had nowhere to go. Pastor Frank spent the day with the boy and saw that his problems stemmed from more than behavioral issues. He couldn't read.

This revelation led Pastor Frank to create a day program for suspended students in Orange County. Through educational enrichment, "FCAT Blitz" and a faithbased approach, 85% of students in Youth Central return to school on track and out of trouble. Click to listen...
