Autherine Lucy, First African-American Student to Enroll in a University

February 3, 1956, Autherine Lucy became the first African-American to enroll at the University of Alabama. However, not long after Lucy's arrival to the University of Alabama, an angry mob retaliated due to her acceptance. Soon after, Lucy was expelled because the University could no longer provide a safe environment for her.
