In most restaurants an automatic gratuity is added to the check when the party is eight people or more. But apparently a pastor visiting an Applebee’s didn’t think that the rule should apply to her. When the check came to the table, Alois Bell pastor of a St. Louis area church, scratched out where the 18% gratuity was added and wrote “I give God 10% why do you get18”.
Chelsea Welch the waitress says she has been stiffed on tips before but had never seen “the Big Man” used as a reason to do so. Welch took a picture of the check and posted it online because she thought it was insulting yet still comical and figured other people would find it funny.
A friend of Bell’s told her about the posted picture when she saw it had gone viral. That’s when Bell called the manager of the Applebee’s to complain. Bell said she didn’t know that they would fire the waitress. Bell says she believe the post was inappropriate especially since her signature is very easy to read. Bell says she is heartbroken and believes she has embarrassed her church.
